Kevin Sprague, M.D., ’80, Honorary President
Dr. Sprague completed his orthopedic residency at Wayne State in 1985 and has been in practice in the downriver area for the past 22 years. He is a past president of the medical staff for Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital, past co-chairman of the Quality & Safety Committee and current chairman of Wyandotte’s Philanthropy Medical Staff Fund. His current practice is located at Oakwood Southshore in the Michigan Bone and Joint Center.
After graduating from Michigan State University, Dr. Sprague entered the School of Medicine in 1976 and married his wife, Carolyn, just before his second year of medical school. She completed a master’s in physiology and then entered the School of Medicine, graduating in 1984. Carolyn has also been past president of the Medical School Alumni Board as well as a member of the Board of Visitors. They have three children: Kevin a 2nd year Wayne med student, Philip who resides in San Francisco and Jennifer a sophomore at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Sprague is a member of the Medical School Alumni Board as well as a member of the Board of Visitors. He is Chair of the Resource Development Committee, which is a sub-committee of the Board of Visitors. Dr. Sprague is enthusiastic about the Alumni Association, “I foresee continued growth for our Association, expanded participation, and continued partnership with the Wayne State University Medical School.”

Jewell Hamner, M.D., MBA ’87, President-elect
Born and raised in the city of Detroit, Dr. Hamner graduated from WSU School of Medicine in 1987 and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at William Beaumont Hospital – Royal Oak.
Post residency, she successfully attended University of Michigan and Madonna University and received an MBA to expand her knowledge base in the arenas of Public Health and Healthcare Administration. During her professional career, Dr. Hamner has garnered broad experience including academic, clinical, occupational and administrative medicine.
She is currently CEO of Comprehensive Health and serves as a member of the Oakland County Medical Society Board of Directors. She is also active with Michigan State Medical Society and frequently serves community health initiatives by offering her time and dedication to patient education.
Dr. Hamner looks forward to serving as President of Wayne State University School of Medicine Alumni Board of Governors. She has a vision to increase membership by reaching out to graduates and finding out how the association can better serve them both professionally and personally. In addition, she strives to continuously engage the current membership to ensure their unwavering support of the school and the association.

The Medical Alumni Association is seeking volunteers to assist with the Annual Telefund. Participants receive free food and have a little fun while helping the School raise funds for important programs that support students. Space is still available on the following dates: Nov. 2, Nov. 6, Nov. 7 and Nov. 8. Calls are made between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. from Scott Hall. If you are interested participating, please contact the Alumni Affairs Office at (313) 577-3587.
