The Wayne State University Medical Alumni Association will host its 14th Annual Freedom Festival Fireworks Spectacular on Wednesday, June 27 (Rain date June 28) at the Detroit Marriott, in the Renaissance Center.  The event includes dinner and entertainment. Convenient reserved parking in Beaubien Place Parking, at Beaubien and Atwater, offers easy access to I-75 I-375 after the event. Space is limited to the first 300 people.

The cost per person is $60 for members and $75 for non-members. A special $38 student rate is available. Tickets for children ages 5 to 10 years are $35 for members and $50 for non-members. Children under age 4 are free. Reserved parking is $15. Take this opportunity to become a member of the alumni association and save! Smoke-free policy to take effect July 1

The Detroit Medical Center’s smoke-free policy will take effect Sunday, July 1. Employees, physicians, patients, visitors, contractors and anyone else on DMC property will not be able to smoke inside or outside of DMC buildings, on pathways to and from DMC buildings, in Brush Mall, parking lots or in personal vehicles parked in DMC parking lots and structures. Smoking will also be prohibited in DMC-owned vehicles (on or off campus).
Wireless service expands

MSIS is expanding its wireless computer network to more of the medical campus buildings. This summer, wireless access points for medical school users will be installed in:

  • Lande Building: May 1 – 25;
  • Elliman Building: May 28 – June 15 ; and
  • 101 Alexandrine:  Installation June 18 – July 6.

The Mott Center and Shiffman Medical Library will be updated with new wireless equipment after building renovations are complete. For more information, please contact Robert Maldonado at rmaldonado@med.wayne.edu.

Cafeteria begins summer schedule Monday

Starting Monday, May 21, and running through Friday, July 27, the Scott Hall Cafeteria, AVI Vital Signs Café, will operate on a summer schedule. The cafeteria will be open 8:15 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. A continental breakfast featuring coffee, tea, bagels, juice, cold cereal, yogurt, and fruit, will be offered.  We will also try serving a prepared hot breakfast sandwich, based on popularity.  The grill will not be open until lunch.

Lunch will continue with many of the same items that are currently offered.  Stir-Fry/Action Cookery will be on Mondays and Wednesdays, and an enhanced lunch grill will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Fish Fry will be on Fridays.  One daily soup will be available, but daily chili will be eliminated.  Pizza choices will change from three to two:  pepperoni and a daily specialty pizza.  The pasta bar will be gone for the summer.  Grab & Go will continue based on demand.  The salad bar will remain.  Regular daily grill items will continue.

The WSU shuttle began its summer hours this week, running 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. In addition, the Scott Hall Cafeteria’s summer hours will be 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
