WSU ranked one of best places to work in The Scientist magazine

Researchers and scientists of Wayne State University ranked the university as one of the nation’s top 40 academic institutions in The Scientist’s annual survey of the best places to work.

Wayne State University placed 29th on the 2009 list, which was topped by Princeton University. Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, Pa., ranked 40th. Wayne State University was not ranked in the 2008 compendium.

WSU’s strengths, according to the survey, included teaching and mentoring, as well as pay.

The magazine conducted a web-based survey from May 5 through July 3. E-mail invitations were sent to readers of The Scientist and registrants of the magazine’s Web site. Respondents were asked to assess working environments by 38 criteria by posing positive statements with which the respondent was asked to agree or disagree. U.S. universities and organizations that received fewer than five responses were omitted from the rankings. In total, the magazine ranked 94 U.S. institutions.
